CUT IT OUT!
(part II)

http://michelleward.typepad.com/how_cool_is_that/2008/04/crusade-no-19-c.html

This month's topic is stencils ! We're encouraged to make our own. Y'all know me, I like to do almost everything digitally these days, so I thought I would share with you a way to make and use stencils in Photoshop with the following mini-tutorial. If you aren't a Photoshop user, this won't make much sense to you, but will give you an idea of the cool things you can do digitally that are similar in appearance to what you can do non-digitally (not sure what the term for that should be--"hands on"?!) And for those of you who do use Photoshop regularly, you will of course recognize that there is more than one way to make stencils in Photoshop; for instance, you could also accomplish the same thing with a clipping mask. The beauty of working digitally is that you can experiment with colors, brush strokes, blending modes, etc., to your heart's content until you get a look that is just right.

Have fun! Here we go...

Launch Photohop and open a new file. The first thing you should do is create a new layer, then delete the background layer (it's funky to work with). Then...

Now Deselect (CTRL+D) (the "marching ants" will disappear).

TIP: If you make the inner color close to the color outside of the stencil, the result will be more "stencil-like".

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial. Now, go create! :^)

Suzanne - thanks for showing us how you make a stencil. As we know with PS there are many ways to get the deed done so it was fun and useful to see it your way. Thanks again! Love that bird.

Phew - not sure I could manage all that, even though your instructions sound clear to me. Giess I'm just a bit "digital-deficient'! I like what you did though and thanks for sharing with us.

I don't have PS - yet - but I think I may be able to try some of what you described in my own program. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

These photoshop instructions are fab. In theory I can do all that - in as much as I can do each step - but it never would have occurred to me to put all those steps together to get that result.

thank you :)

Sounds like a fun thing to try. I have only just started to use PS and once I'm up and running I'll give this a go, thanks for the tutorial. Ux

That is so awesome. I've got to learn PS! Once I figure out layers I'm definitely using your tutorial. It's excellent, thanks!

You are really into this aren't you! Your tutorial was such a nice idea to share with everyone!

There is a song I like and everytime I hear it I say "I like that...who's the band"? My son tells me it's "FlyLeaf" and that he down loaded it to my Zen MP3. He says he told me that 1 million times already! HA!

Have a great hair day! Becci
